Our first trip in Germany: Heidelberg

A couple weekends ago, we checked out the town of Heidelberg, just a little over an hour away from Kaiserslautern. We stayed at an affordable airBnB just walking distance to downtown across a beautiful old bridge. Our first night we ate at a restaurant that offers over 100 kinds of schnitzel! Needless to say, any weight we had lost originally has now been put back on.

Our first morning in Heidelberg, we walked across the bridge and found a lavender shop. They had hundreds of hand-stitched satchels of lavender for only a couple euros each. Let me know if you want me to send some next time we go! We had lunch at a Thai restaurant and enjoyed some Tom Kha Gai soup to warm us up. Next, we took the long hike up to the Heidelberg Castle, where we took a tour of the inside with people from different U.S. states, Brazil, Germany and Bulgaria. Heidelberg castle houses *both* the largest cask of wine ever filled and the largest ever built. Directly under the church there is an area where you can sample different wines, so we partook. "When in Heidelberg..."

We experienced our first German snow in Heidelberg. It was either raining or snowing most of our trip. Despite the weather, we immensely enjoyed our time in Heidelberg and we cannot wait to return and take our family and friends there.

A dreary, snowy day in Heidelberg

Wine tasting after our tour of Heidelberg Castle in the cellar beneath the chapel. Heidelberg Castle houses both the largest wine cask *filled* and the largest wine cask ever built.

The sun came out!
