Day-Trip to Metz, France

 Metz, France is an hour and a half drive from Kaiserslautern. They are also known to have an amazing Christmas market, with delicious oysters and Glühwein. Are you sold? I was. On a boring weekend, we decided to drive up to Metz for the day. I had found the Metz Kayak Club online, and decided we should venture to Metz and have a day of SUPing and French food.

We packed a lunch to save some money up front. The tolls into/out of Metz are €4.20 each way. Considering the roads are nice and uncrowded, I don't mind paying these tolls. When we drove all the way through France to and from our wedding (see here), I wasn't so happy about paying the tolls, but for a day-trip, it's not a big issue.

We took our stand-up paddleboards into the Moselle, and made our way upstream into downtown. The river runs directly through the town, so you are able to view everything from the river. We were the only ones SUPing at the time, so we got some quizzicle looks, but it was the best way to view the city. Nate got some GoPro footage, so we may upload that in the future. It was a great time, and I can't wait to return to Metz (Christmas with the family?).

Day Trip to Trier

Last weekend, we spent Saturday in Bonn and Sunday in Trier. Trier competes with Worms for the title of the oldest city in Germany. There are ruins here from the third century, when Trier was the capital of the Western Roman Empire. Trier is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, namely for its well-preserved ruins.  The drive to Trier was easy and smooth, and we enjoyed every bit of it. Upon arriving in Trier, we easily found parking and walked right out to the sight of the Porta Nigra (the most famous ruin in Trier). After this, we walked around Trier, enjoying the sights of the city. Many of the buildings were built in the 13th and 14th century, with modern store-fronts. It is a wonderful mixture of old and new.  On the way home, we decided not to take the Autobahn, and we wound through all the small towns leading to Kaiserslautern. Barcelona

This post has been in my drafts for over a month now, but I am finally getting to post because the wedding is OVER ! Towards the end of April, Nate and I went to Barcelona on a long weekend. For Christmas, Nate had gotten me tickets to see Florence and the Machine. So, after class on a Friday, we took the train to Frankfurt and caught our flight there. We flew Vueling, so it was a cheap getaway in terms of travel.  Once we got in to Barcelona, we had a little trouble figuring out the best way to get to the hotel. We decided on the bus, and then walked from our exit. By this time, it was very late and we were ready to fall asleep. We finally reached Hotel Market in the Eixample district. It was very nice, and we would consider staying there again. On previous visits, I stayed in the Gracia district and down by Barceloneta.
