Greece Trip | Athens Day 1


In mid-October, we went on a trip with my alumni association to Greece. We traveled to Athens from Frankfurt and then explored Santorini and Mykonos before returning to cold and dreary Germany. I want to thank Herbie at Check:Europe who planned the whole trip and Amy with the Association who was a fantastic host. We had a great time with a great group of Aggies.  
We had a view of the Acropolis from the balcony of our hotel, where we sipped Ouzo and played drinking games. 
We were the last ones to arrive in Athens since we didn't have to travel very far and the rest of the group came from the States. We checked into the Athens Center Square Hotel, freshened up, and headed up to the balcony for our welcome orientation. After meeting everyone, we went to dinner near the Acropolis, where we ate delicious souvlaki and watched Greek dancers perform some traditional dances.



The next morning, we got breakfast and then headed out for our tour of Acropolis Hill and the Parthenon. It was a great experience. I recommend purchasing your tickets in advance because the lines were very long. We had a great tour leader who gave us an incredible amount of information.

After our tour, we had some free time to find some lunch before our flight to Santorini. We opted to stay near our hotel and nosh on some tasty salads and drink some cold beer.

Nürnberg: Volksfest & The German National Museum

For those of you know that Nate has been in Alabama, you should know that he is home now! Well, he was home. Right now he is in Bavaria, but he should be home again soon. On Friday after my language class, we drove to Nürnberg (Nuremberg). The drive was long with the construction and all the lorries, but eventually we arrived in Nürnberg and checked into the Holiday Inn Nürnberg City. The hotel was very nice, especially for the price.  Nürnberg is a charming city in Bavaria, and can be known as a "quintessentially" German city. This is why, in 1927, Hitler chose Nürnberg as the city for its Nazi party rallies (again in 1929, and then annually 1933 through 1938). The Nuremberg Laws were passed during this era, which removed German citizenship from Jews and non-Aryans. Nuremberg was bombed to hell by the Allies from 1943-1945. A Week in Vilnius, Lithuania

Have you ever wondered what it's like to visit one of the Baltic countries? Most likely your answer is "no," but lately Vilnius (Lithuania) has become an increasingly popular place for Europeans to visit. Reason number one being that it is so inexpensive (read: cheap). Vilnius has all the charms of a large European city: high-end shops, streets full of cafes, a beautiful Old Town, etc. Vilnius is large enough, that you can travel there time after time and never see everything you want. From the old TV tower, you can view both the modern parts of the city and remnants of the Soviet era.  Click to enlarge. The taxis are regulated and very inexpensive. They also have uber!  First beers in Vilnius after a long day of traveling. We flew Ryanair from Frankfurt Hahn. Our flights cost just over 60 Euros round-trip per person. However, you can get flights as low as 9 Euros per leg. I found parking just outside the airport for 3 Euros per day. It was a steal!
